The LA Lakers turned the tide late to secure a win over the Miami Heat.
The Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Miami Heat in a contest as both teams have plenty to figure out over the next month. Whether either team makes much-needed moves to improve their playoff chances or not didn’t matter, as it came down to the players that were on the hardwood tonight.
Without Jimmy Butler, who is serving a suspension, the Heat didn’t have enough to support Tyler Herro in what was a massive game from him. Eventually, Miami ran out of juice and the Lakers pulled together a rally to not only take a lead but secure a victory.
Here are three things we learned from the Lakers versus the Heat.
Lakers’ well-rounded effort bodes well for the box score
The Lakers needed this victory. They had lost three straight games while having two contests postponed in the meantime. It had been a while since they had secured a victory. It didn’t come down to LeBron James and Anthony Davis making some heroic efforts, but rather a rounded game from Los Angeles.
With a light nine-man rotation and the five Lakers starters playing heavy minutes — six different Los Angeles players scored more than 14 points en route to the victory. James and Davis had 22 points apiece with Rui Hachimura providing 23 points on 9-of-15 shooting.
Given the nature of James being in his 22nd season and Davis not capable of dragging this team on his own, getting an impact from rotational players is massive, and bodes well for their future games, should they be capable of replicating the impact.
James being a scorer when needed will be crucial moving forward
While Los Angeles mightily benefited from getting a massive impact from all key players, it ultimately came down to needing James to step up at the right time.
The Lakers can make roster tweaks, play through Davis or do whatever they can to make life easier for James, but the 40-year-old needs to score with aggression late in the game. Hachimura swung the game with his 23 points, but James remains the most impactful and valuable player on the team and needs to score like such late in the game.
Late in the game, the Lakers superstar rattled off seven straight points — a 3-pointer and two 2-pointers — to help Los Angeles pull away from the Heat, who trailed by just two points before the run from James.
Tyler Herro will star without Jimmy Butler
It was a scorching hot start from Tyler Herro, who scored 16 first-quarter points while shooting 5-of-5 from the field while playing the entirety of the frame. He knocked down each of his four 3-point attempts amid the hot start.
With Herro setting the tone as the primary scorer, Heat bench players like Kel’el Ware were able to slot into the game and build a lead over the Lakers for Miami.
To have this level of impact without Jimmy Butler proves they can have a star-like presence despite him eventually leaving the club, and Herro will even benefit from the improved role.
While the Heat didn’t get the support needed from the rest of the squad to win the game, the Kentucky product scored 34 points on 12-of-18 shooting and added four rebounds and three assists to his tally for the game.
The Heat should have confidence moving forward with the 24-year-old guard as he continues to add to his impressive campaign in which he’s averaging 24 points per game.
