Update: Liverpool is now in a position to beat Manchester United in the race to sign the “exceptional” £42 million defender.

Update: Liverpool Ready to Outpace Manchester United in Race for £42m Defender – Report

Liverpool is reportedly set to gain the upper hand over Manchester United in the pursuit of a highly-rated left-back, with their Premier League rivals yet to make any significant moves, according to recent updates.

Liverpool Seeking Robertson’s Successor

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has emphasized the need for Liverpool to secure a replacement for Andy Robertson during the January transfer window. Carragher remarked:

“I think Liverpool urgently need a left-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t been performing at his best, and while Conor Bradley shows great promise, Andy Robertson, despite being a club legend, has struggled this season. I don’t believe Kostas Tsimikas is up to the standard required to fill the role. Bringing in a left-back in January would bolster Liverpool’s chances in the title race.”

This assessment reflects Robertson’s inconsistent form this season, prompting Liverpool to explore alternative options. Among their targets is El Hadji Malick Diouf from Slavia Prague, with discussions ongoing over a potential €25m (£21m) transfer.

Additionally, the Reds have been closely monitoring Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu since September. The 20-year-old Danish prospect is attracting considerable interest from Premier League clubs, including Manchester United. However, according to Caught Offside, Liverpool is in a strong position to finalize the deal.

Manchester United Lags Behind

Lecce has reportedly set a valuation of €50m (£42m) for Dorgu, who has drawn attention from Chelsea, Manchester City, and several other top European clubs. Manchester United’s lack of proactive measures, however, has opened the door for Liverpool to move ahead in the race.

Dorgu’s Rising Potential

The highly-rated full-back has been making waves with his performances. In 2024, Dorgu earned recognition for his development and scored his first international goal in Denmark’s 2-0 victory over Switzerland last September. His versatility, having excelled on both flanks, has made him a valuable asset for Lecce, where he has already made 55 appearances.

Dorgu’s statistical output further highlights his potential. Over the past year, he has ranked in the 97th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 minutes among full-backs and the 94th percentile for aerial duels won.

For Liverpool, Dorgu represents an ideal long-term replacement for Robertson, ensuring continuity in a key position. Securing his transfer would not only address their current defensive concerns but also deliver a significant advantage over rivals Manchester United in the January window.
