In mid-January 2025, rumors online claimed pop star Taylor Swift announced a $10 million donation for victims of the wildfires burning in and around Los Angeles. For instance, the Facebook Page Jack Smith Fan Club posted the claim on Jan. 12, writing:
Taylor Swift contributed $10 million to support relief efforts for the California wildfires.
During this challenging time marked by loss and sorrow, she, along with many others, has chosen to make a difference through both large and small acts of kindness.
Some posts sharing the claim included Swift alongside other celebrities who had announced donations, many of whom shared that information publicly.
For instance, singer Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD foundation made a $2.5 million donation, actor Jamie Lee Curtis and her husband, Christopher Guest, donated $1 million and Paris Hilton (archived), who lost her house in the Palisades fire, donated $100,000 and promised to match an additional $100,000 in donations.
However, there was no publicly available evidence suggesting Swift made a $10 million donation.
She had not posted about a donation on social media, nor had any reliable entertainment news outlet reported on the supposed event. Snopes reached out to representatives for Swift to learn more and will update this story if we hear back.
The mixture of true and unconfirmed information in the posts may have made the rumor about Swift’s donation seem more believable. Several users left comments on posts indicating they believed the claim was true.
This was not the first rumor related to the 2025 wildfires that captured social media users’ attention. For example, we previously explained a rumor about recent budget cuts to the Los Angeles Fire Department, debunked a video supposedly showing people looting bagged items during the fire (it actually showed them helping a family member) and explained that a massive spike in demand caused some LA fire hydrants to run out of water.
