The Lakers are a competitive team but still have significant issues across the board should Los Angeles prove to be a legitimate NBA Finals contender.

One of the roster’s weaknesses, specifically in the frontcourt, has become more obvious as the year has gone on. Nick Richards, a standout big man for the Charlotte Hornets, could be a reliable option to be Anthony Davis’ backup down the stretch.

Rob Pelinka’s roster-building decisions have justifiably been questioned, though acquiring Richards could push this 12-man group over the top.

His defensive efforts go above reproach. RIchards is an elite big man from that perspective, making him an ideal partner for Davis as the Lakers prepare for the playoffs.

ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel recently re-mentioned L.A.’s interest in Richards, noting the team previously pursued a trade for him in the offseason. Given the recent uptick in Richards trade buzz, it seems like talks may be picking up steam again.

Pelinka’s poor choices have drowned the organization in recent years despite LeBron James’ excellence, yet acquiring someone like Richards could put this franchise in a position to compete for an NBA Finals appearance.

So far this season, Richards is averaging 9.2 points and 7.7 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per contest. He’s spent his entire career with the Hornets though the seven-foot big man can clearly make a larger impact on a more competitive team.

For the cost of a low first-round pick or a couple of second-round selections, Richards would be an excellent add.

Davis has been clear about his disdain for playing the center position, and Richards would let him play his natural power forward spot while not losing much on the defensive end.

James only has one or two years left. The entire front office should be focused on winning another championship, yet it’s consistently seemed that Pelinka doesn’t realize the ticking time bomb holding him down. If the Lakers have a chance to acquire Richards, they need to take it.
