Virgil van Dijk Confronts Referee After Controversial Decision in Liverpool’s Loss to Tottenham

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk addressed referee Stuart Attwell following the team’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, questioning the decision not to dismiss Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall.

Bergvall, 18, scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute—his first for Spurs—securing a narrow advantage for Tottenham ahead of the second leg at Anfield.

However, Liverpool players and fans were furious, arguing Bergvall should have received a second yellow card for a foul on Kostas Tsimikas shortly before his goal.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Van Dijk said, “It was obvious it should’ve been a second yellow. Everyone on the sidelines could see it.”

The controversy stemmed from Bergvall’s foul on Tsimikas just moments after being booked for a sliding tackle on Luis Diaz, with many believing the second challenge was even more severe.

While Van Dijk was critical of the referee’s decision, he didn’t blame the result entirely on that moment. “I’m not saying that’s why we lost, but it was a key moment in the game,” he clarified.

The Dutch defender also acknowledged Tottenham’s strong defensive performance, which made it difficult for Liverpool to find the net.

“We had some good spells and chances, but we just couldn’t finish,” he remarked. “Now, our focus shifts to the second leg at Anfield.”

Van Dijk commended Spurs for their improvement since their recent 6-3 defeat to Liverpool. “They were much more solid defensively this time. We had our opportunities, but breaking them down wasn’t easy,” he added.

As Liverpool prepare for the decisive second leg, Van Dijk remains confident, emphasizing the need to learn from their mistakes in the first match.

The Anfield showdown will determine who progresses to the final, with Liverpool determined to overturn the slim deficit.
