The relationship between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat is rapidly falling apart.
Just hours after finding out that Butler had formally requested a trade from the team, NBA fans are gaining insight into just how strained the situation in Miami really is.
According to Barry Jackson, via NBACentral, Butler’s camp says the Heat recently threatened to suspend him after his game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
That game was on Wednesday and Butler reportedly asked for his trade just one day later.
Although the Heat were able to beat the Pelicans, Butler didn’t have a great game and posted just nine points, four rebounds, and two assists.
That was enough to get the negative attention from the team’s coaching staff and front office, who want to see so much more from the six-time All-Star.
It didn’t matter that Butler was coming off of an absence due to illness, the Heat weren’t accepting his meager nine points.
Just a day later, he scored nine points yet again, this time against the Indiana Pacers in a loss.
Following that, Butler spoke with the press and made it very clear that he isn’t happy in Miami.
Now the Heat have to decide what they will do next: give into Butler’s demands or hold onto him for the rest of the season.
They don’t want to rush into a trade they aren’t happy with but they also don’t want to cling to a player who hasn’t hit double digits for the last two games.
If the Heat really did threaten to suspend Butler, that means the team isn’t happy with him.
That suggests things could get very ugly in the days ahead.
