One of the most talented players to ever play for Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid was running back LeSean McCoy.
A former second-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, McCoy played for Reid in both Philadelphia (2009-2012) and Kansas City (2019). McCoy finished his career as a two-time All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowler, and was also named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
McCoy led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 17 under Reid in Philly during the 2011 season. That feat is even more impressive when you consider that Reid is a pass-heavy coach. McCoy was in the twilight of his career when he rejoined Reid in Kansas City in 2019, only playing sporadically. Although he was inactive for the AFC Championship game and Super Bowl LIV, McCoy got his first Super Bowl ring with the team that year.
Now days McCoy is a media personality and a co-host on FS1’s “The Facility.” When posed with the question if any other team in the AFC can stop the Chiefs from reaching the Super Bowl, McCoy was not only clear in his answer, but also revealed that even though he’s an Eagle at heart, he wants Reid to get the NFL’s first ever Super Bowl three-peat.
“No,” McCoy answered on the Chiefs being stopped. “I know the Chiefs look different, right? Well, not yesterday, but the weeks before that game, they’re not explosive. They can’t do this. They can’t do that. All these other teams look better. And I kept saying, what about the equity part? Because I did play the game at a high level, and I know how hard it to be good and consistent every single year. The worst we’ve ever seen the Chiefs with Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes is an AFC Championship game. And we’re talking about a [potential] back-to back-to-back three-peat. We ask if they’re the best team and who can stop them? Nobody can. And the scariest part for my birds [Eagles], but I’m going for Andy Reid, I’m not going to sugarcoat that. Yeah, I’m an Eagle and all that, but I want Andy Reid to get this three-peat. He’s the best coach in football, and of all-time.”
McCoy putting his Eagles allegiance aside and rooting for Reid to win the Super Bowl speaks volumes to the impact Reid made on McCoy. It would be easy for McCoy to say that Reid and the Chiefs have had enough success as of late and it’s Philly’s turn, but McCoy wants Reid to make history.
Reid has always had a great reputation among the guys who have played for him throughout his 26-year tenure as a head coach. He coaches them hard, but treats them fairly, allows their personalities to shine, and doesn’t give up on them easily. He is also known for giving players second chances, such as quarterback Michael Vick and running back Kareem Hunt.
The Chiefs have positioned themselves well to win their third Super Bowl in a row as they have clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC. They now have the opportunity to rest several key players in what is now a meaningless Week 18 matchup against the Denver Broncos, then they’ll have a first-round bye and home field advantage throughout the postseason.
