Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs sailed to a 29-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Netflix’s slightly glitchy Christmas Day broadcast, securing their position as the top seed in the AFC.
Despite the win, Mahomes was not in a celebratory mood post-match – when offered cake by the Netflix NFL team, he politely declined, stating that he’s “watching” his weight until the playoffs.
His teammate, tight end Travis Kelce, however, didn’t hesitate before tucking into the football-shaped red velvet cake. Mahomes was named the game’s MVP after completing 29 of his 38 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns, marking his first game with 300-plus yards and three-plus touchdowns in 2024.
During his breakout 2018 season, the Chiefs quarterback achieved this feat seven times. Before being presented with more gifts from Netflix reporter Stacey Dales, Mahomes and Kelce were given Santa coats.
“We do have another gift for you,” Dales announced, presenting them with Netflix custom Christmas game balls. “I’m a little bit scared,” Mahomes admitted before opening up the ball to reveal a cake.
“Oh it’s a red velvet cake,” Kelce exclaimed with a broad smile.

Before Dales could even inquire if Kelce fancied a slice, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end was already tucking into the cake with gusto. Mahomes, on the other hand, exercised restraint.
“I’m watching my weight until [the] playoffs,” confessed the esteemed former NFL MVP. Kelce humorously quipped mid-bite: “It’s more pushing it away than pulling it in, as coach [Andy] Reid would say.”
Mahomes eventually made up his mind about the tempting treat. “Coach Reid is ready for it, I’m [going to] take it to him.”
With their first-round bye in the bag, the Chiefs might consider benching both Mahomes and Kelce for the upcoming game against the Denver Broncos.
On the flip side, Pittsburgh’s defeat spells trouble for the Steelers, who’ve lost grip on their AFC North fate. They must now overcome the Cincinnati Bengals next week and pin their hopes on the Baltimore Ravens losing one of their remaining two matches.
