Cristiano Ronaldo Names His Top Professionals at Manchester United, Omits Marcus Rashford
Cristiano Ronaldo revealed just three players he considered “top professionals” during his second stint at Manchester United, omitting Marcus Rashford in the process.
Earlier this week, Rashford addressed questions surrounding his professionalism after being left out of Ruben Amorim’s matchday squad for United’s Premier League clash with Manchester City. Speaking to journalist Henry Winter, Rashford said:
“I do feel misunderstood, but I’m fine with it. I’m a very simple person. I love football. That’s been my life from the beginning.”
Amorim clarified there were no disciplinary issues behind his decision to drop Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, though he hinted at concerns regarding their training performances.
Despite this, Ronaldo’s praise during his infamous interview with Piers Morgan notably excluded Rashford. Instead, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner named Diogo Dalot, Lisandro Martinez, and Casemiro as standout professionals during his time at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo’s Admiration for Dalot, Martinez, and Casemiro
Ronaldo highlighted Dalot, his fellow Portugal international, as a model of professionalism and predicted a bright future for the young defender:
“In Manchester United, I can mention Dalot. He’s young, but very professional. I don’t doubt he’s going to have longevity in football because he’s smart, intelligent, and very professional.”
Ronaldo also singled out Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro for their dedication, with Casemiro being a familiar figure from their time together at Real Madrid.
Criticism of the Younger Generation
During the interview, Ronaldo criticized the mentality of younger players, saying they lack the same “hunger” as players from his generation:
“I don’t think they don’t respect the more experienced players, but they live in a different era. The hunger [is different]. They have things more easily—they don’t suffer, and they don’t care.”
Ronaldo extended his critique beyond Manchester United, pointing to a global trend in football:
“I don’t mean only a few at Manchester United, but all the teams in all leagues in the world. The younger players are not the same as my generation. But you cannot blame them—it’s part of life and the new generation, the new technologies that distract them.”
He concluded with a pointed remark on how younger players respond to advice:
“They listen, but this is why we have two ears. They listen from one side, and it goes out the other.”
Rashford’s Opportunity to Prove Himself
Rashford’s omission from Ronaldo’s list and recent squad decisions have fueled speculation about his professionalism. However, the England international has shown flashes of brilliance under Amorim and remains determined to reclaim his place in the team.
With key fixtures on the horizon, Rashford has the chance to demonstrate his value and shift the narrative surrounding his dedication and focus.
