The Kansas City Chiefs are on pace for the No. 1 overall seed in the AFC and have their sights set on an unprecedented third straight Super Bowl win, but could have something unlikely standing in the way — quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Though the Chiefs have jumped to an NFL-best 13-1 record this season, their offense has struggled at times with Mahomes making a number of uncharacteristic mistakes.
Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon wonders when the team’s luck might run out.
In an article highlighting the biggest weaknesses of all the Super Bowl contenders, Gagnon pointed to Mahomes as the road block for the Chiefs and suggested it could be their downfall in the playoffs.
“The Chiefs can make it happen this year, but it’s hard to believe they can sustain it all considering how often they’ve gotten lucky despite inconsistent and generally sloppy play offensively,” Gagnon wrote. “
A now-injured Patrick Mahomes is having the worst season of his career, and he lacks support at offensive tackle, wide receiver and even in the offensive backfield.”
Gagnon wrote that it was “not too surprising” that the Chiefs have failed to crack 30 points on offense this season given their struggles.
The team has instead relied on its defense and some big plays — like a last-second blocked field goal to beat the Denver Broncos — to maintain the league’s best record.
The Chiefs did get some good news this week, with Mahomes recovering from an ankle injury that knocked him out of last week’s win over the Cleveland Browns.
He now appears on track to play on Sunday.
