BREAKING NEWS: FA tipped to launch investigation after ‘unusual’ controversy in Spurs vs Man Utd

The FA have been tipped to launch an investigation after an unusual incident late in Spurs’ Carabao Cup win over Manchester United.

Spurs set up a semi-final showdown with Liverpool after a pulsating 4-3 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The hosts were 3-0 up and cruising early in the second half courtesy of a brace from Dominic Solanke and an effort from Dejan Kulusevski but goalkeeper Fraser Forster helped United get back in the game with two errors playing out from the back leading to Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo finding the net.

Heung-Min Son scored directly from a corner to make it 4-2 before Jonny Evans added a late consolation.

Son’s goal was a piece of brilliance which completely caught out United’s second-choice goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, but the Turkish shotstopper was adamant he was fouled by Lucas Bergvall , who gave him a little tug on the arm as the ball came flying

VAR was not in use in this stage of the competition but United players were furious as the goal – and controversial incident – was shown on the big screen.

Bayindir ended up being carded, while captain Bruno Fernandes was also booked for protests after screaming at the referee while pointing out the screen showing the contact Bergvall.

What ex PGMOL chief had to say about the scenes

And given the United players surrounded the referee after seeing a replay, former PGMOL chief believes both the FA and EFL will launch an investigation into the conduct.

“An interesting and unusual incident with regard to the big screen in the stadium tonight,” Hackett told Tottenham News .

“Manchester United’s players were furious as several replays of the goal scored by Son Heung-min were played.

“The Manchester United players were very unhappy for the video highlight appeared what looked like a foul on Altay Bayindir.

“Showing the goal from Son Heung-min is standard procedure but this was a controversial goal.

“Bayindir had already complained to referee John Brooks that he was fouled by Lucas Bergvall.

“With the incident replayed Man United’s Fernandes was yellow carded by referee John Brooks for shouting at him while pointing to the screen.

The United skipper may have had a point but despite there being a big screen – there is no official use of VAR available.

“I have no doubt that this will be investigated by the league and the Football Association disciplinary panel.”

United and Spurs are both back in Premier League action on Sunday, with the Red Devils taking on Bournemouth in a 2pm kick-off at Old Trafford before Ange Postecoglou’s side host Liverpool in a precursor to their upcoming two-legged semi-final.
