Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has criticised Andy Robertson’s recent performances, particularly after his costly mistakes led to Liverpool dropping points against Fulham on Saturday.
Robertson’s troubles began early in the match when he was on the receiving end of a strong challenge from Fulham’s Issa Diop. While some argued the tackle warranted a red card, the referee and VAR decided otherwise. Shortly after, Robertson’s poor defensive positioning allowed Andreas Pereira to put Fulham ahead, giving the visitors an unexpected lead at Anfield.
Things worsened for the Liverpool left-back just six minutes later when a heavy touch gifted possession to Harry Wilson, who broke free towards goal. Robertson’s desperate attempt to recover resulted in a foul outside the box, earning him a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. Liverpool were left to play with 10 men for the remainder of the game.
Although Cody Gakpo equalised early in the second half, Muniz restored Fulham’s lead in the 76th minute. Just when it seemed Liverpool were heading for their second home defeat of the season, Diogo Jota salvaged a point with a late goal.
Jamie Carragher Calls for Reinforcements at Left-Back
Following Robertson’s struggles, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged the club to sign a new left-back, suggesting Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez as an ideal candidate. Speaking on Sky Sports (quotes via Daily Mail), Carragher said:
“(Against Fulham) He didn’t look like he was sprinting back properly after that earlier knock, and his poor touch led to the red card. He needs help. Liverpool have no real back-up, and it’s something they must address in January.”
Carragher praised Kerkez, saying:
“Kerkez has been outstanding at Bournemouth. The technical director who brought him there (Richard Hughes) is now Liverpool’s sporting director. Kerkez is aggressive, a proper full-back, and he’s been excellent since arriving in the Premier League. He’s one to watch for the future.”
Robertson’s Ongoing Struggles
This isn’t the first time Robertson has looked off the pace this season. He gave away clumsy penalties against Southampton last month and against Real Madrid, though Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved both, sparing further embarrassment.
While Robertson remains a key figure in Liverpool’s recent success and is still a fan favourite, his form this season has led to growing concerns about his reliability. Many now believe it may be time for the club to find a long-term replacement.
Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is a strong candidate, but Liverpool have also been linked with Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, a high-profile option to strengthen the left-back position.
