Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury late in the Chiefs’ 21-7 win at Cleveland on Sunday. Carson Wentz replaced Mahomes for the final 5:23 after the injury as the former Texas Tech Red Raiders QB finished the game 19-of-38 for 159 yards and two touchdowns.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid described his quarterback as “day to day” in his post-game press conference. “Patrick, his right ankle has been hurt. It’s not broken, but it’s sore,” Reid said, via NFL.com.
“He’ll get started on the rehab part of it as we go, and then we’ll just have to see how he does down the road here.” Mahomes says he expects to know more on Monday. “It’s hard to say right now. Obviously, still adrenaline rolling,” Mahomes said.
“Usually the day after is when you get a good sense of it. I feel like I could have finished the game in different circumstances.
But I thought the smart decision was to put Carson [Wentz] in. He’s played a lot of football, and he finished the game well.” In typical Mahomes fashion, he was trying to make a play when the injury occurred. Kansas City was up 21-7 at the time, which ended up being the final score.
“I was trying to make a play happen,” Mahomes said. “As I threw the ball I got hit, and I haven’t seen it, [but] It felt like someone hit me from behind as well, so kind of got rolled up on. Kind of happens in football. Try to bounce back up, but obviously it hurt a little bit. Now we’ll get after the rehab part of it and try to be ready for next week.”
