Juan Soto dropped the highly-anticipated news on Sunday night when it was announced he was signing a 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets to break the record for the largest contract in the history of professional sports.
Reporters have worked hard to obtain as much information about the negotiation process as possible in recent weeks.
Even though the New York Yankees reportedly came close to meeting Soto’s financial desires, there was one reported issue that he wasn’t happy with regarding his time with the Yankees.
Jon Heyman reported live from the Winter Meetings that a Yankees security guard booted Soto’s mom or dad from the stadium early this past season.
This created some negative feelings with Soto before the same guard eventually threw Soto’s driver and chef out of the stadium as well and forced them to wait out in the rain.
If this report is true, it makes sense why it would influence Soto’s decision to sign elsewhere.
When you’re signing the biggest contract in sports history, it’s a reasonable expectation that your family and entourage would be taken care of as well.
If the Yankees couldn’t guarantee that while also meeting the money the Mets offered, it shouldn’t be a surprise he has moved across town.
Mets owner Steve Cohen made it clear months ago that he was prepared to hand Soto a blank check, which happened in the end after weeks of speculation suggesting otherwise.
It will be interesting to hear more about how these negotiations went down.
