Kansas City Chiefs: Harrison Butker Comes Under Fire for Questionable Political Spending

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the most popular teams in the NFL for multiple reasons. Having won two Super Bowls in a row, they are widely known for their dominance on the gridiron.

Star players like quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce are among the best as their respective positions and are on career paths that will likely end with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Of course, Kelce’s relationship with 14-time Grammy Award winning popstar Taylor Swift has also made Kansas City one of the most followed NFL teams, not only in the United States, but around the world as well.

Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Made a Name for Himself This Year

Back in May of this year, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker became a household name due to polarizing remarks he made about women and other marginalized groups during a commencement speech at Benedictine College.

“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.

“How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Many people, including celebrities and other athletes, found Butker’s remarks demeaning and offensive. However, many also supported what he said.

In the months that followed, the Chiefs kicker became one of the most well-known supporters of conservative values and politicians. He used his newfound notoriety to start a political action committee (PAC) that he said would work to “mobilize Christians to vote” for “traditional values.”

However, that does not seem to be what he used the PAC for.

Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Gets Called Out on Social Media for Questionable PAC Spending

According to an X (formerly Twitter) account called Citizens for Ethics, an analysis of Butker’s PAC fundraising and spending revealed that none of the money it generated went towards his goal of encouraging Christians to vote for Donald Trump and other conservatives in November’s election.

In fact, of the $36,000 that the PAC raised, $30,000 of it was spent on “fundraising consultants.” $100 was used to buy office supplies.

Citizens for Ethics also looked at Butker’s individual political donations as such things are public record. Interestingly, no such donations could be found.

It should be noted that Butker did not do anything illegal with his PAC. That being said, it appears that he was far less than forthcoming with the purpose of his committee based on which it spent its money.
