For Kansas City, Bill Belichick was impressed with the acquisition of Josh Uche. When it comes to his former organization, however, Belichick doesn’t think the Patriots received enough in return.
On Monday, the Patriots traded Uche for the Chiefs for a 2026 sixth-round pick. When the deal was first announced, Belichick, appearing on ‘The Pat McAfee Show,’ assumed the Patriots acquired a 2025 sixth-rounder
d comp pick. When told that the Patriots only received a 2026 pick back, Belichick said it sounded like Eliot Wolf could’ve received more for Uche last week.
“Okay, so a 2026 6th rounder, they take them this year. If they don’t re-sign him, they’ll probably get a sixth as a comp pick. So it washes out,” Belichick said. “If they do re-sign them, then that means they like the player, and the player can help them win. And so it’s a great trade. So, I mean, I think it’s a great trade for Kansas City.
“It sounds like the Patriots probably could have got more for him last week, but… it sounds like it didn’t work out. And then, Kansas City got (DeAndre) Hopkins, and so they had to change the trade around. I think it was a great move by Kansas City, they didn’t really go up anything for him.”

Belichick’s point about the comp picks makes sense for Kansas City. For the Patriots, who have ample cap space, it was unlikely they’d receive a comp pick had Uche left in free agency. By trading him, it guarantees they’ll receive something in return.
Last week, the Chiefs acquired Hopkins in a deal with the Tennessee Titans where they traded a 2025 fifth-round pick that becomes a fourth-rounder if Kansas City reaches the Super Bowl and the receiver plays 60% of the snaps.
Ironically, the Patriots nearly traded Uche last offseason around the NFL trade deadline when Belichick was in charge of the team’s front office.
At the time, Belichick informed Uche the Patriots were talking to other teams about a trade. Ultimately, Belichick opted to keep Uche in Foxborough.
“The conversation I had was a mutual thing where the organization wanted me here, and of course, I wanted to finish my career where I started,” Uche told MassLive last year after the trade deadline.
Uche had a career year with Belichick and the Patriots in 2022 when he finished with 11.5 sacks playing opposite of Matthew Judon. In 2023, he finished with three sacks and then opted to take less money to return to the Patriots to play under Jerod Mayo.
Uche had two sacks in seven games and was a healthy scratch on Sunday.
“If it was a ‘26 sixth then, honestly, then they didn’t give up anything, in my mind,” Belichick said of the Uche trade. “And then, if you like the player, re-sign him.
Look Josh Uche is a really good rusher. He hasn’t had a chance to rush much this year for the Patriots, because they’ve been behind a lot. And, you know, the situation hasn’t been good. But he had a big year two years ago now, he had Judon on the other side of him, so it was two good pass rushers.
“But he’ll have a lot of opportunities to rush in Kansas City. I think that he’ll really help him. He’s got surprising power for his size. He’s got excellent quickness and a good get off, and he has some flexibility in coverage. I think it’s a good addition for a team that needs another pass rusher, which everybody does. Josh can do that. He’ll definitely help him.”
