Taylor Swift's Vancouver concerts this weekend may mean long wait times crossing the border

Taylor Swift is wrapping up her widely successful The Eras Tour in Vancouver, B.C., this weekend. As regional hotel prices surge and the local economy is expected to benefit from the pop star’s visit, drivers may be stuck waiting in long border-crossing lines this weekend.

Swift will perform at Vancouver’s BC Place on Dec. 6-8, with ticket prices ranging from $1,422 to $83,078 a piece. Hotel prices near the venue will also cost a pretty penny, as hotels usually priced at $284 to $556 per night are selling for $1,053 to $7,005 per night.

As the venue’s 54,500 seats are almost filled for the concert, traffic is expected in the Vancouver area and at both sides of the border crossing.

For those crossing into Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency did not confirm they would have any extra agents working during the concert weekend but Canada Border Services Agency spokesperson Luke Reimer told The Bellingham Herald the agency “works in an operating environment that changes on a daily basis, and we are ready to respond and adapt as needed.”

“The CBSA invests significant effort planning and preparing for peak travel periods,” Reimer said. “The agency monitors traveler volumes and works hard to minimize border wait times at ports of entry, without compromising safety and security. We encourage travelers to plan ahead, expect delays and check border wait times.”

For those crossing the border into Washington after the concert, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is planning to have extra agents on staff to accommodate a surge in visitors.

“The Seattle Field Office’s Area Port of Blaine will have increased staffing to accommodate a possible surge in traffic from travelers returning from the upcoming Taylor Swift concerts in Vancouver, British Columbia,” Jason Givens, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol regional press officer, told The Bellingham Herald. “The increase in staffing is scheduled at both the Peace Arch and Pacific Highway ports of entry on all three nights of the concerts.”

“While staffing will be increased, it’s difficult to predict when and how many fans will be traveling,” Givens said. “It’s anticipated the majority of traffic will be during non-peak travel times and the extra travelers can be absorbed by the increase in staffing. However, extended wait times are still a possibility.”

Border crossing wait times are continually updated online at bwt.cbp.gov and on the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol app.
