The Kansas City Chiefs are having a busy week in terms of transactions. With the November 5 trade deadline looming, the Chiefs acquired DeAndre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday morning. However, that wasn’t the only roster move the team made ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

On Tuesday, the Chiefs lost their practice squad QB Bailey Zappe after the Browns signed him following Deshaun Watson’s injury. Kansas City quickly replaced him with former Chief Chris Oladokun. One move that went under the radar was the Chiefs bringing back wide receiver Cornell Powell to the practice squad.

This was made possible after the Chiefs placed CB Jaylen Watson the IR list and signed Keith Taylor to the active roster.

Chiefs Sign WR Cornell Powell to the Practice Squad

Powell was drafted by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. For every following year, he has been waived before the start of the season and signed back to the practice squad.

Before the 2024 season, some thought that maybe this was the year the former Clemson standout would make the 53-man roster. Powell had multiple great plays during the preseason, where he finished with six catches on eight targets for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Much to his frustration, however, Powell was left off the roster once again.

The 26-year-old only suited up for three games for Kansas City throughout his career, playing three offensive and 28 special teams snaps. He will be waiting for his chance to be elevated to the active roster. Considering the bad injury luck to Chiefs’ wide receivers this season, Powell may finally get more of an opportunity.
