Former France international Bacary Sagna has expressed belief that Paul Pogba would seize the opportunity to rejoin Manchester United for a third spell, citing the appeal of working under new manager Ruben Amorim.
The comments come as Pogba, currently a free agent, looks to revive his career after a turbulent period.
The 2018 World Cup winner parted ways with Juventus earlier this month by mutual agreement, having made just 12 appearances during his second stint in Turin.
This followed a significant career setback when Pogba received a four-year doping ban in September 2023 for inadvertently consuming a prohibited substance.
However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced his suspension to 18 months, clearing the way for him to return to training in January and compete by March 2024.
Still only 31 years old, Pogba’s talent remains undeniable. Sagna, a former Arsenal and Manchester City defender, believes the midfielder could make a stunning return to Old Trafford, two years after his last departure. Speaking to Mega Dice, Sagna explained why Amorim’s presence could be key to Pogba’s potential comeback:
“The situation at Manchester United is different now compared to when Paul was there. They have a young, modern coach who has been a player himself and understands these scenarios. Amorim would likely welcome Paul back because he knows how much Paul loves United.”
Sagna emphasized Pogba’s enduring affection for the club despite his struggles during his second stint, which spanned six years and yielded two trophies.
“I’ve spoken to Paul many times, and he genuinely loves United. Things didn’t go as planned during his return, but he wasn’t the only player facing challenges at the club during that time,” Sagna said.
United’s current midfield situation could further bolster the case for Pogba’s return. Injuries to Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have left United short of options, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen struggling to complete a full match in the recent 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town. Amorim, tasked with revitalizing the team, might see Pogba’s experience and creativity as a valuable addition.
While questions remain about Pogba’s fitness and form after such a lengthy layoff, the possibility of a return to Manchester United under Amorim has added an intriguing layer to his redemption story. Whether this move materializes, however, remains to be seen.
