The Chiefs’ biggest position conundrum remains unresolved. In an emergency move late in the narrow victory over the Las Vegas Raiders last Friday, the Chiefs benched starting left tackle Wanya Morris, moved left guard Joe Thuney into his position and brought Mike Caliendo off the bench to play guard. Is this the plan for the next game, at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football? Does Morris return to the role?
Or is newly acquired D.J. Humphries ready to step in and lock down the position? Andy Reid was asked about all the options and committed to no scenario. Here’s what he said about Humphries, signed by the Chiefs last week: “We’ll work him in and see how he feels,” Reid said. “That’s the main thing. He hasn’t played in a while, so I just want to make sure he’s in a good position.” Humphries spent the previous eight years with the Arizona Cardinals, including a Pro Bowl season in 2021.
He’s coming off a torn ACL but practiced with the Chiefs last week. With a short period to prepare for the Raiders, Humphries wasn’t activated. “This week, I’ll have a better idea as we go, and he’ll have a better idea how he feels,” Reid said. “And we’ll just go from there.” Reid said it “wouldn’t be fair” to Humphries to name him a starter entering this week. “We play it by ear, as we go, and if he feels OK, we give him an opportunity,” Reid said. “If it’s not where it needs to be, you don’t.”
Another possibility is to continue playing Thuney at tackle, as he did for the final seven offensive snaps against the Raiders, with Caliendo at guard. “That’s another one of the options we’ve got,” Reid said. “I’d rather have Joe playing at guard because he’s very good there, (but) Caliendo isn’t bad either.
We have some flexibility there as needed.” Against the Raiders, the Chiefs struggled at left tackle for the second straight week. Patrick Mahomes was sacked five times, which matched the previous week’s total against the Carolina Panthers. In both games, the Chiefs were a double-digit favorite.
Both were won on a last-second snap: a game-winning field goal at Carolina and a fumbled Raiders snap for a turnover when they were driving for a game-winning field goal. The Chiefs started the season with rookie Kingsley Suamataia as the starter. But late in the Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he was benched for Morris, who has been the starter since. After the Raiders game, Morris said there were no excuses for his performance. “I have to be better,” he said. “Things won’t always go your way. It’s how you respond. I can either lay down, or I can get up, go back in there, learn something and get better.”
