A major refereeing controversy has emerged following the UEFA Champions League encounter between Galatasaray S.K. and Liverpool F.C., with former FIFA referee Keith Hackett insisting that match officials made a significant mistake during the game. The debate centers around a key decision that ruled out a Liverpool goal, a moment that could have dramatically changed the outcome of the match.
The Turkish side managed to secure a narrow 1–0 victory over Liverpool during their Round of 16 first-leg clash in the UEFA Champions League. The decisive moment arrived early in the match when midfielder Mario Lemina scored in just the seventh minute, giving Galatasaray an early advantage at the RAMS Park stadium. That solitary goal ultimately proved enough for the hosts to claim the win and put pressure on the English champions ahead of the return leg.
During the second half, both teams experienced moments of frustration when goals were disallowed. Galatasaray believed they had doubled their lead when striker Victor Osimhen capitalized on a defensive error from Ibrahima Konaté and fired the ball into the net. However, the celebrations were quickly cut short after the assistant referee raised the flag for offside, nullifying what could have been a crucial second goal.
Liverpool later thought they had found the equalizer late in the match when Konaté managed to put the ball in the back of the net with around 13 minutes remaining. Unfortunately for the visitors, the referee ruled the goal out for handball. The decision sparked immediate debate among players, pundits, and fans, as many questioned whether the contact with Konaté’s arm truly warranted disallowing the goal.
Hackett, who officiated internationally for a decade and also spent years refereeing in the Premier League, strongly criticized the call. According to him, the available footage suggests the ball may have brushed Konaté’s arm, but he believes it was not a deliberate action. Hackett argued that the defender did not intentionally make his body bigger or attempt to gain an advantage, making the punishment appear extremely harsh from his perspective.
However, not everyone agrees with Hackett’s assessment. Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg defended the officials’ decision, pointing out that the rules regarding handball are strict when it comes to goals. He explained that even accidental contact can lead to a goal being ruled out if the ball goes directly into the net after touching a player’s arm without another teammate making contact first.
With the controversy still fresh, attention now turns to the decisive second leg between Galatasaray and Liverpool, which will take place at Anfield. Both sides know the tie remains finely balanced, and the upcoming clash promises to be intense as they battle for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. Fans will be hoping that the next match is remembered more for the football itself than for another contentious refereeing decision.
