Football fans were left stunned this week after shocking legal developments emerged involving a former academy player who once wore the colours of both Manchester United and Liverpool at youth level.
What Happened?
The incident dates back to Friday, November 28, when a man in his 20s was shot on a driveway along Radway Road in Huyton, Merseyside. Reports indicate the victim suffered serious leg injuries after being shot twice and was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Police believe two individuals arrived at the scene on a Sur-ron electric bike before the attack took place.
Police Action Across Merseyside
On Thursday, February 19, officers executed coordinated warrants across Knowsley, Sefton and Liverpool. Four men were arrested as part of the operation.
Among those charged is 32-year-old Patrick Sean Lacey, a former midfielder who previously played for Accrington Stanley and spent time in the youth systems of Manchester United and Liverpool.
He now faces multiple charges, including:
- Attempted murder
- Conspiracy to murder
- Possession of a shotgun and ammunition with intent to endanger life
- Grievous bodily harm (Section 18)
- Conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm
Three other men — Johan Aaron Jones (35), John George Patrick Hughes (31), and Bernard Flynn (61) — have also been charged with the same offences.
All four are scheduled to appear before Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton and St Helens Adult Remand Court.
From Football to the Ring 🥊
Lacey began his career at Tranmere Rovers before progressing through academy setups at Manchester United and Liverpool. He later featured for clubs including Chester, Altrincham, Barrow, Accrington Stanley, Southport, and Flint Town.
Interestingly, he also stepped into professional boxing during his sporting career, recording 10 wins and just one defeat. Earlier this year, he lost on points to Jack Swallow.
Investigation Ongoing
Detective Inspector Chris Clark of Merseyside Police’s Firearms Investigation Team confirmed that the investigation remains active. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information — including CCTV, dashcam, or doorbell footage — to come forward.
Police stress that even small details could prove crucial.
This developing story has understandably raised eyebrows across the football community. As legal proceedings move forward, more clarity is expected in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned for updates.
