RIVALRY FIRESTORM: The tension erupts as Mets pitcher Devin Williams throws a bold social-media jab straight at Yankees fans, instantly igniting the New York baseball feud to a whole new level. The unexpected swipe sends shockwaves through both sides as the rivalry heats up ahead of the season. So what set off this explosive shot?..ll

This past week, the New York Mets made a huge signing when they reached a contract agreement with two-time All-Star reliever Devin Williams to a three-year, $51 million deal. After a tough lone season with the New York Yankees in 2025, Williams made it clear on Wednesday through a social media post that Yankees’ fans are “mad” at him for signing with the Mets.

The Mets are expected to be very active this offseason, and their biggest moves may still be ahead. After trading for Marcus Semien and now signing Devin Williams, the Mets are serious about addressing their needs. That also includes two huge decisions in the free agency of both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz.

Devin Williams Shares Petty Social Media Post Towards Yankees’ Fans

On Wednesday, Devin Williams relished in his new signing by sharing a story post via his Instagram story that served as a diss towards New York Yankees fans.

Here is what the post reads, according to SNY_Mets X page, or Devin Williams’ personal IG story:

“For a bunch of people that didn’t want me back on your team, y’all sure are mad in the DMs.”

There is never any love lost between New York MLB fan bases when it comes to players on either side signing with their cross-town rival. But Williams makes a good point, why should Yankees fans want him back?

Devin Williams posted a 4.79 ERA in 62 innings. He recorded 18 saves in 2025, but lost his closer role multiple times after many blown saves. It was clear that the Yankees and Williams were just not on the same page, and it became semi-obvious that his free agency would feature him signing elsewhere. However, the Mets’ acquiring Williams now brings up the big question of if they will re-sign Edwin Diaz.

Will the Mets Re-Sign Edwin Diaz?

This now becomes one of the biggest questions the Mets’ front office will have to answer.

The early reports indicate that Williams may be open to being in a “set-up” role, and New York is still interested in signing Edwin Diaz. However, Devin Williams is getting paid closer money now, and it will be interesting to see if the Mets can afford both All-Star relievers.

As for what the Mets are getting in Devin Williams, before the 2025 season, he had been arguably the best reliever in MLB. Before last season, Williams had four straight seasons of posting a sub-2.50 ERA and recorded 65 saves in 141 innings from 2022-2024.

However, Williams’ 4.79 may have been very unlucky, and a product of pitching at Yankee Stadium. His FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching) was 2.68. FIP essentially measures a pitcher’s effectiveness at limiting home runs and walks, as well as causing strikeouts. He punched out 90 batters in 67 appearances last season.
