Thomas Frank observed as Tuesday night’s encounter ended in a 2–2 draw between Newcastle and Spurs.
Although Newcastle weren’t at their peak, they dominated much of the match and posed a greater attacking threat. Still, Spurs managed to hold on for 70 minutes before Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring with a superb finish.
Spurs didn’t have a shot on target until the 77th minute, but Cristian Romero made it count by heading in the equaliser. Shortly after, VAR flagged a clear foul on Dan Burn during a corner, allowing Anthony Gordon to confidently restore Newcastle’s lead from the penalty spot.
Spurs, however, salvaged a late point thanks to another poorly defended set piece. Romero scored again, this time with a slightly off-target overhead kick that crept into the bottom corner—marking Spurs’ second and final shot on target. After the game, Frank criticised the officials, insisting Spurs had earned “a more than well-deserved point.”
Reflecting on the result, Frank said:
“The bicycle kick—off the shin and into the bottom corner—was incredible. But first, credit to Cuti. His overall performance was outstanding: defending, composure, duels, and scoring two goals. While the bike kick grabbed the headlines, the header was arguably better than what many strikers could achieve.
“I loved the character the team showed after three challenging matches. Coming here—our fourth game in ten days, third away—falling behind twice and still coming back shows the team’s mentality.
“Regarding the penalty, I don’t think it was justified. Even some Newcastle people admitted they didn’t see it as a penalty. We need consistency—if that counts as a foul, you’d see two every game. I think the referee initially made the right call; VAR should only intervene when it’s clear and obvious.
“But the focus is on us. It’s a great point away, and I’m pleased.
“The fans were phenomenal—3,000 travelled, supporting us throughout, singing for Vicario. That shows real unity.”
On the impact of the travelling support, he added:
“You could really hear them. This is a tough stadium for away fans, but they matched the team’s effort. That togetherness helped us secure what I believe was a fully deserved point.”
Regarding Romero’s leadership:
“Of course, it matters. You can set everything up tactically, but key moments rely on influential players. Cuti delivered that today.”
On the importance of showing spirit:
“It’s crucial. We played well against PSG, and the Fulham game was a nightmare—2–0 down after six minutes—but the team kept fighting. In tough periods, the only way through is hard work and persistence. The players did that brilliantly tonight.”
