If you believed the New York Mets were really going to trade Brandon Nimmo, kudos to you. You’re built differently.
The ongoing Nimmo rumors felt like the usual offseason noise. His full no-trade clause in addition to so many other factors made it feel like nothing but whispers. The rumors came true. Nimmo is no longer a Met and we have Marcus Semien to get to know.
So what’s next for the Mets? After the Nimmo blindside, David Stearns has these five players on the block to shop. They’re feeling like the next to go.
5) Ronny Mauricio
The trade for Semien only slightly adds to the chances of Ronny Mauricio getting dealt. He seems to have fallen down the depth chart into becoming more of a third baseman than anything else. However, with Brett Baty proving himself more as a suitable big leaguer than Mauricio thus far, Mauricio’s role as a left-handed hitting third baseman becomes moot now that Baty won’t have much second base to play.
Mauricio got caught between a weird place where he arrived to the majors after some of the regular young players and before the next wave. His injury during the 2023-2024 offseason in the Winter League dropped him out of the team’s plans further. Struggles last year to hit against lefties made him a limited player who still needs to battle to make the roster next year.
One remaining minor league option can save Mauricio from getting permanently placed on the trade block. The Mets have enough of a reason to stash him in the minors. His infield versatility and continued promise of becoming a good MLB hitter should have the Mets only cautiously shopping him around this offseason.
