The news of the release was reported by SNY’s Andy Martino.
Montas was due to make $17 million in 2026. He tore his UCL in his right elbow, though, meaning he likely won’t pitch at all next season.
The Mets signed Montas to a two-year, $34 million contract in December 2024.
He ended up appearing in just nine games for the Mets. That added up to 38.2 innings. He had a 6.28 ERA.

Montas had an opt-out clause in his contract, but of course he didn’t go for that. So the Mets will have to pay him the $17 million next season regardless.
He had earned the contract by throwing 150.2 so-so innings (4.84 ERA) in 2024 with the Reds and Brewers.
But this is now his third of the last four seasons that ended prematurely due to injury. It’s hard to see Montas getting anything but a dart throw of a chance when he comes back from this latest injury.
The Mets have plenty of business still to be taken care of this offseason. This one was an easy call, though.
