The Kansas City Chiefs can’t seem to catch a break with injuries.
After the Week 12 win over the Carolina Panthers, Chiefs HC Andy Reid told reporters that the team escaped the victory unscathed. He mentioned that TE Peyton Hendershot suffered calf cramps during the game, but he returned to the game and finished with no issues. It seems that Coach Reid might have spoken too soon. Team PR confirmed on Tuesday that Hendershot would be placed on injured reserve due to his calf injury.
This marks the third backup tight end to go on injured reserve this season for Kansas City. Hendershot joins Jody Fortson and rookie TE Jared Wiley on the reserve list. Fortson suffered a serious knee injury during an onside kick in the Chiefs’ Week 8 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Wiley suffered a season-ending ACL injury during practice just a few days later.
The Chiefs have a few options at the tight end position on the practice squad. The team activated TE Baylor Cupp from the practice squad injured list on Tuesday. Cupp is a rookie out of Baylor who has a strong training camp and preseason. In corresponding moves, they released OT Lucas Niang and DE Truman Jones from the practice squad. Both of those moves make quite a bit of sense, given recent additions at EDGE and OT.
They’ve also got veteran TE Anthony Firkser from the practice squad. Firkser signed to the practice squad in early November, marking his second stop in Kansas City. He was originally signed by the Chiefs as a rookie in 2017 and spent a chunk of the 2018 offseason in Kansas City before being released shortly after the 2018 NFL draft.
FIrsker has since spent three seasons with the Titans from 2018-2021, in addition to hopping around a few different teams since. He has recorded 106 career catches for over 1,100 yards and five touchdown grabs in 58 regular-season games with four starts.
