The Golden State Warriors have struggled on the road to start the season, entering Wednesday’s matchup with the San Antonio Spurs looking to snap a six-game road losing streak. In response, head coach Steve Kerr made a change to the starting lineup, moving Jonathan Kuminga to the bench and inserting rookie Will Richard in his place.
Kuminga has had trouble finding his rhythm over the past three games, shooting inefficiently and struggling to generate consistent offense. Still, his overall numbers remain solid on the year. Through his first 12 appearances, Kuminga has averaged 14.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists while shooting 48.1% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.
Unfortunately for Kuminga, his attempt to get back on track came to a halt on Wednesday. He struggled off the bench, logging 12 minutes in the first half without recording a point or assist.
With just 32 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Kuminga unexpectedly headed to the locker room, raising concern given the timing. Moments later, the Warriors announced that he had left with an injury. “Jonathan Kuminga (knee soreness) will not return to tonight’s game,” the team posted on X.
Since being selected seventh overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga’s journey with the Warriors has been a rollercoaster. He has flashed potential in stretches but has struggled with consistency, role clarity and injuries. Last season marked a step backward, as his minutes fluctuated and his impact was inconsistent during key stretches.
Kuminga was expected to solidify his place in the rotation and prove he could be a long-term piece this year. This latest setback only adds pressure, as he tries to stay healthy and show he can contribute meaningfully to a team with playoff aspirations.

The knee issue is not a new development, but it appears Kuminga suffered a setback given his early exit. Kuminga entered the night with a questionable designation due to bilateral knee soreness but still suited up and gave it a go.
Kuminga’s injury comes at a tough time, especially after a long offseason of negotiations as a restricted free agent. The Warriors ultimately retained him, but trade speculation has lingered, with league executives viewing him as a potential candidate to be moved if Golden State looks to retool midseason.
