Guglielmo Vicario has offered a frank assessment of Tottenham Hotspur’s latest Premier League defeat to Chelsea, admitting the team fell well below the standards expected.
Spurs have struggled for consistency under Thomas Frank this season, with just one win in their last five league matches. While there have been occasional positive results, supporters are still waiting for a sustained spell of convincing performances to restore faith in the project.
That didn’t happen on Saturday, as Tottenham were outplayed at home by their London rivals. Chelsea secured a 1-0 win, extending their streak to five straight victories over Spurs, and the scoreline could have been far worse if not for Vicario’s standout display in goal.
The Italian goalkeeper made eight saves and prevented over two expected goals, but after the match, he didn’t shy away from acknowledging how poor the team had been. Speaking to the club’s official media, Vicario described the defeat as one of their weakest performances of the season.
“Definitely not one of our best performances, a bad day for us on the pitch,” he admitted. “It’s hard to accept, but it’s the truth. We all need to look at ourselves and do more. When you represent this club, you have to give everything, every single day.”
Asked where he felt the team needed to improve, Vicario highlighted composure and courage on the ball as key areas.
“It’s across the board, really. We need to be braver in possession. At times, we play with too much anxiety, without clear heads. That little bit of calmness can make the difference and help us reach a higher level.”
He also opened up about the atmosphere in the dressing room after the loss, admitting the defeat hit the squad hard.
“It’s tough, especially in a game like this. You expect to show energy and quality, but when things go wrong, everyone knows they have to give more—individually and collectively—if we want to get good results and feel proud of ourselves.”
With two important fixtures approaching before the international break, Vicario urged the team to move forward quickly.
“Today was a bad day, and we didn’t play anywhere near our level. It’s a game we have to put behind us now. We’ve got a big Champions League night on Tuesday, and we need to refocus and build from there.”
Tottenham will now need a swift reaction as they look to regain momentum and confidence in the coming matches.
