WEEK 8 WHIPLASH: Chiefs leave Washington shell-shocked, Mahomes magic hits again and whispers say KC’s dynasty gears just shifted into overdrive as rivals panic over a comeback brewing in plain sight..ll

10 Quick Facts Following the Chiefs Week 8 Win Over Washington | Upon Further ReviewThe Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Washington Commanders, 28-7, for their fifth win in their last six games on Monday night.

Here are some quick notes from the win.

1. The Chiefs scored 28+ points for the fifth week in a row.

Kansas City has now scored 28+ points in five straight games, marking the longest streak for any team at any point this season. It’s also tied for the longest such single-season streak in franchise history.

Kansas City has outscored the opposition by a mark of 154-75 during that stretch, and since Week 4, the Chiefs lead the NFL in yards-per-game (415.8) and total first downs (132).

2. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues to lead the NFL in total offensive touchdowns.

Mahomes now has 21 total touchdowns on the season, which leads the NFL. Mahomes is also now tied for the league-lead in passing touchdowns (17) and ranks second in passing yards (2,099) through Week 8.

The 30-year-old Mahomes made some more history on Monday, too. He’s now one of just two players (joining Peyton Manning) to tally 40,000+ passing yards through nine career seasons, and don’t forget, Mahomes only appeared in one game during his rookie year.

3. Wide receiver Rashee Rice found the end zone for the third time in two games.

Rice continued his strong start to the year on Monday with nine catches for 93 yards and score, leading the team in receptions and ranking second in receiving yards behind only tight end Travis Kelce.

Rice, who made his season-debut last week, now has 16 catches for 135 yards and three touchdowns through two games.

4. Tight end Travis Kelce put together his top statistical game of the season.

Kelce hauled in six grabs for 99 yards and a touchdown on Monday, racking up a season-high 54 yards after-the-catch. Kelce now has at least 60 receiving yards in three of his last four games, and for the season, his 474 receiving yards trail only the Colts’ Tyler Warren among all tight ends. The 35-year-old Kelce also leads Kansas City in receptions (37) and receiving yards (474) through Week 8.

Additionally, Kelce’s third-quarter touchdown made some history, too. It marked the 83rd regular-season score of his brilliant career, matching Priest Holmes for the most in franchise history.

Kelce is also one of eight players to record at least 250 scrimmage yards for the Chiefs this year, which leads the NFL. No other team has more than six.

5. The Chiefs racked up 21 unanswered points in the second half.

Kansas City rebounded from a slow start to rip off three-straight touchdown drives to begin the second half. Patrick Mahomes was brilliant during that stretch, completing 15-of-17 passes for 196 yards and three touchdowns across those three possessions.

Mahomes led drives of 80 yards, 75 yards and 94 yards during that run, providing the Chiefs with a lead that they never gave up.

6. Tailback Kareem Hunt found the end zone twice on Monday night.

Hunt was a busy man on Monday, tallying 10 touches for 42 yards and two scores.

He powered ahead for a 1-yard touchdown on the Chiefs’ first scoring drive midway through the second quarter, and then on Kansas City’s opening series of the second half, Hunt hauled in a 2-yard score on fourth down to put the Chiefs in front.

Hunt now leads the Chiefs in total touchdowns this year with five.

7. The Chiefs held Washington to just seven points on Monday.

Kansas City turned in another strong defensive performance on Monday night, holding the Commanders to just seven points across eight possessions. It was particularly stout in the second half, holding Washington quarterback Marcus Mariota to just 6-of-13 for 58 passing yards.

The Chiefs also contained tailback Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, limiting the talented rookie – who entered the game averaging over five yards-per-carry – to just 25 yards on nine carries.

8. Defensive end Mike Danna had a game to remember.

Danna filled the stat sheet on Monday night, hauling in an interception on the Commanders’ opening series and tallying a critical, third-down sack late in the third quarter.

Another defensive player who stood out on Monday was defensive end George Karlaftis, who racked up a team-high nine pressures on the night. Karlaftis now has 4.5 sacks on the year, and since 2022, his 29.0 sacks rank 11th among all players.

Cornerback Trent McDuffie was excellent as well on Monday, allowing just one catch (on two targets) for 25 yards across 31 coverage snaps.

9. Linebacker Jack Cochrane hauled in the first interception of his career.

Cochrane, who has routinely logged significant snaps on special teams over the last four seasons, had a chance to record some defensive snaps late in Monday’s game due to the Chiefs’ sizable lead, and while the result was in-hand, Cochrane didn’t waste the opportunity.

In fact, the Commanders’ final offensive play of the night ended with Cochrane’s first-career interception, marking Kansas City’s second takeaway of the night.

10. Kansas City is now two games above .500 for the first time this season.

The Chiefs have fought back from an 0-2 start to now win five of their last six games, moving two games above .500 for the first time this year.

Kansas City is just one game behind the Denver Broncos for first place in the AFC West, and with a big-time showdown against the Buffalo Bills on deck, the Chiefs will take aim at their fourth win in a row this upcoming Sunday.
