Ruben Amorim Criticizes Jonny Evans After Manchester United Debut Ends in Draw
Ruben Amorim didn’t shy away from publicly addressing areas for improvement following his first game as Manchester United manager, a 1-1 Premier League draw against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
The match at Portman Road began on a high note for United, with Marcus Rashford opening the scoring in the second minute after an impressive assist from Amad Diallo. However, the early promise faded as Ipswich fought back, with Omari Hutchinson finding the equalizer through a deflected strike.
While the game showcased glimpses of Amorim’s tactical ideas, it also exposed several shortcomings, particularly in defensive organization and pressing. Fans were critical of some individual performances, and Amorim appeared to agree, singling out Jonny Evans for his role in Ipswich’s attacking freedom.
Amorim Calls for More from Evans
In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, Amorim responded to Jamie Redknapp’s question about United’s need to improve their high-intensity pressing to align with his system. The Portuguese coach specifically mentioned Evans, who started on the left of a back three alongside Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui before being substituted for Luke Shaw in the 56th minute.
“If you see the first half, the number five [Morsy] was always alone, and we have to jump on him,” Amorim explained. “Then the number 20, Hutchinson, was always in the dead space. Jonny Evans should be pressing that guy.
“But when we don’t have training, it’s hard to explain all the reactions to the players. We had two days. They’re a little confused and stay in position. If you stay there, you don’t run. You defend, but you don’t run.”
Amorim highlighted the importance of physical conditioning and tactical understanding, saying: “You feel that in the data. First, the players have to understand the game. Then, we have to be so much better physically to cope with high pressure, the volume of high-speed running—all these things. We need time to work.”
Tactical Tweaks and Next Steps
Amorim’s first XI featured some notable changes, including Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot operating as wing-backs in a 3-4-3 system. Rashford was deployed centrally, pushing Rasmus Hojlund to the bench.
Despite the frustrations, Amorim will have a chance to regroup and implement his ideas ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash against Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt at Old Trafford.
Currently sitting 12th in the Premier League, six points off the top four, United face mounting pressure to improve their form. For Amorim, finding the balance between tactical cohesion and physical readiness will be crucial in turning the tide.
