Stephen Curry and Seth Curry of the Golden State Warriors on the bench in the first half of play against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Golden State Warriors have waived Seth Curry, the younger brother of superstar Stephen Curry, just days before their season opener against the Los Angeles Lakers, the team announced Saturday.
Seth, who joined Golden State on a non-guaranteed contract, participated throughout training camp but did not see action in the preseason. His release, however, is viewed as a strategic salary-cap move rather than the end of his time with the franchise.
According to ESPNâs Anthony Slater, the Warriors â currently hard-capped at the second apron â are expected to re-sign Curry later this season on a pro-rated veteran minimum contract. The move would allow the team to preserve flexibility and remain under the tax apron line.
NBC Sportsâ Kurt Helin added that the Warriors could bring Curry back as soon as November 15, though a December timeline âwould give them more cushion against the tax apron.â
Kerr: âThe Timing Feels Rightâ for the Curry Brothers
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr praised the organizationâs decision to bring Seth into the fold during training camp, calling it a âlong overdue momentâ for the Curry family and for fans whoâve waited years to see the brothers together in Golden State.
âI think itâs awesome,â Kerr said earlier in the training camp. âThe timing feels right on this. I donât know if the timing was right over recent years â we probably didnât have playing time for him. He was in a place where he was going to teams and playing a lot, making money. And it just feels like theyâre both at a point in their careers where this makes a ton of sense. Iâm thrilled to have Seth and to see the two brothers side by side today at our meeting. It was pretty awesome.â
Kerr and the Warriorsâ front office have long admired Sethâs professionalism, perimeter shooting, and adaptability â traits that fit seamlessly into the Warriorsâ ball movement-heavy system.
Seth: âItâs Definitely Special to Be Hereâ
For Seth, joining his brotherâs team â even briefly â was a dream more than a decade in the making.
âItâs definitely special,â Seth said after signing. âFeels like a good time in both of our careers for me to be here. Itâs funny â Kerr, Steve, and Mike asked me a few times over the years if Iâd ever want to team up with Steph. I know Iâve said before that I didnât want to be on the same team, that I wanted to create my own path, but itâs good to be here now at this stage.â
He added that heâs eager to contribute to the Warriorsâ veteran core and championship pursuit.
âThis is a veteran team, and weâre trying to get back to winning games and chasing a championship,â Seth said. âIâve always felt like the Bay showed me a lot of love â like it was one of my homes, especially with Steph being here so long.â
Stephen Curry: âHe Knows How to Get It Doneâ
Stephen Curry said having his brother in camp â even temporarily â has been a âspecialâ experience for both.
âI know how he approaches the game,â Steph said. âI know how good he is. He knows how to pick and choose his spots depending on his role and always finds a way to get it done. Itâs cool to practice against him and see what Iâve known for the last decade â how he works, how he carries himself. And he gets to hang out with his nieces and nephews a little more, too, which is cool.â
Seth Curryâs Veteran Presence and Shooting Still Valued
Seth, 34, is coming off a career-best shooting season with the Charlotte Hornets, where he hit 45.6% from three-point range, narrowly topping Stephen Curryâs single-season high of 45.5% set in 2011â12.
While he played limited minutes (15.6 per game), Sethâs elite efficiency and experience remain attractive to the Warriorsâ coaching staff, particularly for stabilizing the second unit when Stephen rests.
âIâve probably watched 95% of Warriors games over the last 16 years,â Seth said. âI know their style and how they play. I just need to learn the terminology they use, and once I do, Iâll fit right in whenever they need me.â
Golden Stateâs Plan: Patience Now, Reunion Later
For now, Seth Curry will wait for the Warriors to make the financial space needed to re-sign him. But few doubt heâll be back in uniform soon â this time, finally as a teammate to his brother.
Once Golden State reopens that roster spot, the NBA could see one of its most heartwarming storylines realized: Stephen and Seth Curry sharing the floor together in the pursuit of another Warriors championship.
