⚡ SHOCK SCRATCH: Trevon Diggs ruled out at the last minute against the Commanders — plans scramble, energy shifts, and the Cowboys’ defense faces a sudden storm.. ll

Trevon Diggs on returning to practice, aiming for Week 1 return vs. Eagles

FRISCO, Texas — Trevon Diggs will not take the field when the Dallas Cowboys host the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Oct. 19, per head coach Brian Schotteheimer, following news received from the team’s medical staff on Friday morning.

“Trevon Diggs came in this morning with some concussion symptoms after having an accident in his home,” said head coach Brian Schottenheimer. “He’s been checked out by our doctors, and he’s in the protocol, and we’ll miss the game.”

At this time, the nature of what caused the injury is unknown.

“We’re gathering information,” the Cowboys’ head coach added. “I just got that information walking over from our doctors … but it happened last night.”

This strikes a sizable blow for an already struggling Dallas defense that will now be without one of its two All-Pro cornerbacks as they try to contain quarterback Jayden Daniels, even with All-Pro wide receiver Terry McLaurin having also been ruled out, per Commanders’ head coach Dan Quinn.

Diggs’ absence this Sunday will mark his third game missed this season due to injury, and thrusts depth at the position toward center stage yet again entering Week 7.

Caelen Carson, nearing his return from injured reserve, has been a full participant in each practice over the past two weeks and is likely to be activated to the 53-man roster this weekend, an available spot having been created by the move to waive wide receiver Jalen Cropper before ultimately re-signing him to the practice squad.

The immediate onus will be on Kaiir Elam, whom the Cowboys traded to acquire this past offseason, to step in as starter with Diggs sidelined, opposite All-Pro cornerback DaRon Bland and with Reddy Steward remaining at nickel corner. There is also Trikweze Bridges, who could find himself on the game day roster this week, and Robert Rochell eligible for an elevation from the practice squad.

As for Diggs, the story is developing.
