The New York Mets fell short of the postseason in embarrassing fashion last season, so this offseason is going to be more important than ever.
The Mets need to make the best possible moves in order to give themselves a chance at redemption next year. That begins with re-signing their own free agents, including Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz.
Alonso is going to dominate the headlines, but re-signing Diaz might be as important as any move the Mets make.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter recently projected Diaz would sign a four-year deal worth $88 million in free agency this offseason, which should fit perfectly in the Mets’ payroll.
“The $20.4 million AAV on Diaz’s last contract was the largest in MLB history for a reliever, and he is expected to opt out of the final two years and $37 million of that deal in search of more guaranteed money,” Reuter wrote. “A modest raise and two additional years should be an easy decision for the Mets.”
This level of contract would seemingly fit Diaz perfectly. There aren’t many relievers in baseball worth over $20 million a season, but given the righty’s dominance, he’s earned it.
The Mets need to do everything in their power to keep him in Queens for the foreseeable future.
When he’s at his best, there’s no better closer in baseball. If the Mets are serious about winning, they need to commit to Diaz again this winter.
