The New York Mets won the Pete Alonso sweepstakes last winter, but they’re going to need to win it again this offseason after the slugger opted out of his contract with New York.
After a very productive year, Alonso’s value has gone up quite a bit. The Mets are going to be fighting an uphill battle to sign him back this winter.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter recently made the shocking prediction that Alonso would give a massive seven-year, $210 million deal this offseason.
“Pete Alonso was a free agent for the first time last offseason, and he failed to find the long-term deal he was seeking, ultimately finding his way back to the Mets on a two-year, $54 million deal that paid him $30 million in 2025 with a $24 million player option for 2026.
“After another terrific season where he racked up 327 total bases — the most since his record-setting rookie campaign — he has done nothing to hurt his value and will again be looking for that long-term pact this winter.”
It’s hard to imagine Alonso signing a deal of this magnitude after his market didn’t develop last offseason.
Alonso could land something closer to the $150 million range, but $210 million is possible if a bidding war breaks out.
The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are two big competitors for the Mets to watch out for in the Alonso sweepstakes. Both of these teams have holes at first base and the money to steal Alonso out of Queens.
