Running back (and kick returner) Samaje Perine put the Chiefs in good position to start the game — and the team took advantage. On just the third offensive play, tight end Travis Kelce occupies the defense’s attention, leaving fellow tight end Noah Gray wide open for the 35-yard touchdown.

Every defensive lineman that came to the podium heading into Carolina emphasized getting to the quarterback, and defensive end Mike Danna followed through to beat his man and get to Bryce Young for a strip-sack.

Mahomes senses the tackle protection breaking down, then steps up to find Hopkins all alone in the end zone. That’s already three touchdowns for Hopkins in Kansas City.

After the Panthers managed to tie the game, the Chiefs’ quarterback needed to find a way to go down and score again. Seeing the defense was back, Mahomes scrambled up the field for 33 yards to get Kansas City into field-goal range. New kicker Spencer Shrader would take care of the rest.
