$162 Million Mets Contract Considered Nightmare After September Collapse

The New York Mets‘ 2025 season was an epic failure from top to bottom. With one of the top payrolls in Major League Baseball history, signing Juan Soto to the largest deal in Major League Baseball history, and more, not even making the postseason is a significant problem. Fans, ownership, and the players understand that.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction the Mets take this winter, but some believe that some of their contracts pose a problem. That includes Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, who views Brandon Nimmo as the worst one on the team. He even went so far as to say that Nimmo could be like Starling Marte has been for the past few years.

“The first three seasons of Nimmo’s eight-year, $162 million deal have been respectable enough, worth a bit better than 3.0 WAR on average. But here come the years that made the sheer length of that contract a big surprise to many when it was signed. Nimmo has already transitioned from full-time CF duties to basically a full-time LF, and he has a .744 OPS over the past two years compared to an .828 mark in his ages 27-30 seasons.

“For New York’s sake, here’s hoping Nimmo’s next five years don’t wind up being on par with Starling Marte’s past three seasons,” he wrote .

Could the Mets Trade Brandon Nimmo?

Nimmo makes a lot of money, and it’s tough to say that he was even 1 percent of the New York Mets’ problems at times; it was really a team effort outside of a few players. He didn’t play as well as he typically does, but he still hit .262 with 25 home runs. His numbers could’ve been better, posting the second-lowest OPS+ that he has over the past five seasons, but he’s still respected around the league.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, he’s someone who could be dealt this offseason.

“You could trade Nimmo, who’s pretty average defensively in left field, outstanding in the clubhouse, great hitter. But I could see [him getting traded]. His contract is tradable,” Heyman said.

Would the Mets Be Better Off With Brandon Nimmo?

Others are arguing that the New York Mets shouldn’t move on from someone like Nimmo because of what he brings to the locker room, given the reports suggesting that the Mets are dealing with problems in the clubhouse. Grant Young of Sports Illustrated noted that because of the chemistry issues with the players, keeping him on the roster should be in the team’s plan moving forward.

“Nimmo still has five years left on the eight-year, $162 million contract extension he signed with New York in December of 2022. There’s no question that the Mets could get a solid return for him, given the consistency he has shown throughout his MLB career, and that every team could use a quality offensive outfielder.

“Then again, a huge storyline amid the Mets’ second-half collapse has been questions about locker room chemistry. With that in mind, it doesn’t seem wise to trade away a guy who is clearly a positive aspect of New York’s chemistry and team culture,” he wrote .
