Thomas Frank can take Tottenham ‘a long way’ thanks to iconic duo

Thomas Frank can take Tottenham 'a long way' thanks to iconic duo

Tottenham will need players who can produce moments of brilliance if they want to compete for all trophies this season.

The Lilywhites have had a strong start to the season. Spurs’ win over Leeds United lifted them to third in the Premier League table before the international break.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s comeback against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League means that Thomas Frank’s side remain unbeaten on the European stage.

But it is still early days, and Frank will no doubt want to maintain and even build on this momentum.

Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr’s importance shared

Pape Matar Sarr has become the unlikely protagonist in Frank’s new shade of Tottenham these past couple of months.

Spurs supporters knew he was destined for greatness under the Dane when he netted a screamer in Tottenham’s win over Arsenal during pre-season, and he hasn’t disappointed since.

Meanwhile, Lucas Bergvall started for Spurs in their opening league win against Burnley, but was later demoted to a rotational role.

However, after strong performances against West Ham and in the Champions League, he has established himself as a crucial piece of Frank’s puzzle.

As a result, former Brentford manager and ex-Premier League midfielder Martin Allen – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes the two young stars will be important to how the Lilywhites perform this season.

“Sarr is a good player,” Allen said.

“He’s mobile, he gets around the pitch, he gets in the box, he plays all over the pitch. He’s got license to run, and he is a good player. I really, really like him, and he’s getting better.

“Bergvall is a good player. He is a top, top player, and he’s still young. He can run, he gets his foot in, he’s good on the ball. He’s good technically.

“So I think Tottenham have got a couple of good, young players that are going to take Tottenham, I feel a long way.”

Both Bergvall and Sarr shone against West Ham

Sarr and Bergvall have already become iconic at Tottenham despite their limited time in North London and will no doubt lift the club to new heights if given the time and guidance to develop.

Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr have different qualities

Bergvall has been playing as a makeshift 10 under Frank these past couple of weeks, although, after Xavi Simons’ performance against Leeds in that role, whether he continues in that position remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Sarr has shone in centre midfield for the Lilywhites, acting as a controller and facilitator of attacking sequences.

Both have unique qualities that enrich the North London side. Bergvall is an excellent carrier of the ball, already recording 75.9 progressive carries per game.

Sarr has also been essential to Spurs’ ball progression, averaging 91.2 and 78.8 in forward and key passes this season.

While Sarr has arguably been the more important player so far this season, there is no doubt that both will climb to new heights under Frank.
