Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs offense have missed wide receiver Rashee Rice during their 2-3 start to the 2025 NFL season.

By the end of his rookie season in 2023, Rice looked poised to become Mahomes’ top wideout. His seven receiving touchdowns led the team, and he tacked on 26 catches for 262 yards and a score during the Chiefs’ postseason march to a Super Bowl LVIII victory. His upward trajectory was halted in 2024 when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4.

The long absence continued when Rice accepted a six-game suspension on Aug. 27 for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, resulting from a league investigation into his role in a multicar crash in Dallas that left multiple people injured during the 2024 offseason.

With his Week 7 return against the Las Vegas Raiders nearing, Rice sparked excitement by returning to social media for his first public post since the suspension began.

It is unclear whether or not the post was about football, but most of his recent activity has to do with the Chiefs.

How Chiefs Have Adjusted Without Rice

Everybody has been eating so far this season, but it has not resulted in many wins.

Without a true No. 1 wideout and Xavier Worthy battling injuries, the Chiefs have different leaders in several major receiving categories through Week 5:

Tyquan Thornton leads in yards (272) and touchdowns (3)
Hollywood Brown leads in receptions (26) and targets (40)
Travis Kelce leads in first downs (13, tied) and yards after catch (143)

Chiefs Ready For Rice’s Return

Kelce spoke honestly about Rice’s suspension last month, saying it will “create that much more love and that much more fight” in the 25-year-old receiver when he returns.

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid, a three-time Super Bowl winner, can see the change coming as well.

Rashee Rice, who is eligible to return in Week 7 after serving a suspension for his role in a March 2024 car crash, remains the Chiefs’ most reliable route runner and biggest receiving threat.

“You had Rashee come back in the building, then you had Xavier being able to play,” Reid told ESPN on Monday. “All of a sudden, that wide receiver room is saying, ‘We’re kind of whole.’”

“There’s a certain energy that comes out of there, and then (Mahomes and Kelce) bring it every day,” Reid continued. “But you’ve got to have that extra element there with the receivers.”

Rice will remain out for one more game as Kansas City faces the Detroit Lions on “Sunday Night Football” at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
