The New York Mets experienced one of the worst endings to a regular season in recent memory, perhaps even in MLB history. After once holding the best record in baseball, the team completely fell out of playoff contention, and many didn’t hold back on criticizing the Mets.

“The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn’t a collapse. It’s a disintegration,” Passan posted.

To reach this low point, the Mets endured some brutal losing streaks. In three separate months, they suffered losing streaks of at least seven games, which is historically bad.

“The Mets lost 7 straight in June. They lost 7 straight again in August. They lost 8 straight in September. The only team in MLB history to have 3 separate 7+ game losing streaks & yet still make the playoffs was the 2006 Cardinals, who went on to win the World Series that year,” Opta Stats posted.

Looking ahead to the offseason, the Mets face some critical roster decisions. In one trade prediction, they are linked to acquiring Nolan Arenado from the Cardinals.

“Whereas Arenado was picky with who he was willing to waive his no-trade clause for last winter, he’s a bit more open this time around. That, in turn, could be an opening for the Mets, who should also be attracted to his burning desire to win,” Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer wrote. “Sean Manaea: $50 million through 2027 Nolan Arenado: $42 million through 2027 ($5 million paid by Colorado Rockies)”

This move would likely force Brett Baty to the bench or require finding a new position elsewhere. However, the Mets would gain a significant defensive upgrade.

Motivated not to repeat their disastrous collapse, the Mets are poised to bounce back next season. Adding Arenado would also bring veteran leadership to the clubhouse.
