Red Sox make roster moves, add two coaches to major league staff

The Red Sox did not tender contracts to Isaiah Campbell or Bryan Mata, both of whom were designated for assignment this week, but brought both former 40-man roster pitchers back on minor-league deals.

The Sox further announced Friday they will tender contracts to all 29 remaining unsigned players on the big-league roster. There are 10 players who are already under contract: Brayan Bello, Rafael Devers, Lucas Giolito, Liam Hendriks, Ceddanne Rafaela, Rob Refsnyder, Trevor Story, Garrett Whitlock, Justin Wilson, and Masataka Yoshida.

Lefthander Bailey Horn was claimed off waivers by the Tigers.

Additionally, the Red Sox rounded out their coaching staff, hiring Jose Flores to be the first base coach/infield instructor and Parker Guinn to serve as catching instructor/bullpen catcher.

Flores spent the last three seasons in Triple A Worcester as bench coach. This will be his third stint in the majors. He was an infield instructor with the Cubs from 2013-2017, the first base coach for the Phillies in 2018, and the Orioles’ infield and third base coach in 2019-20.

Guinn spent the last two years working for the Yankees as a manager in the Dominican Summer League.

Jason Varitek will serve as the Sox’ game planning and run prevention coach. Alex Cora (manager), Ramon Vazquez (bench coach), Pete Fatse (hitting coach) Andrew Bailey (pitching coach), Ben Rosenthal (assistant hitting coach), Kyle Hudson (third base coach/outfield instructor), and bullpen catcher Charlie Madden remain in their roles. Chris Holt and Dillon Lawson were recently named bullpen catcher and assistant hitting coach, respectively.
