Jones is a great power-hitter and can certainly be something in Major League Baseball one day, but the fact of the matter is that he strikes out far too much to believe he can be elite at the highest level.
On the flip side of that, there’s reason to believe that his 35 home runs throughout the 2025 season, with 19 hit in Triple-A and 16 in Double-A, could play in the show. If he finds a way to eliminate some of those strikeout problems, the Yankees might even have a superstar on their hands.
Could the Yankees trade Spencer Jones?
But that didn’t stop Eric Cole of FanSided from naming him one of the six most likely trade candidates this winter. In Cole’s defense, there are many reasons to consider moving on from Jones, with none bigger than the Yankees already having multiple outfielders if they decide to bring Trent Grisham back in free agency.
“Spencer Jones is an incredibly polarizing prospect. When he is good, Jones is among the most exciting hitting prospects in baseball period with a blend of power and speed to dream on.
“However, he also strikes out at an alarming rate which should spook any team including New York. The longer he wastes away in the minor leagues, the lower his value is going to get. Expect the Yankees to at least see if they can find any other teams that believe in Jones’ talent and are willing to part with anyone that can actually help New York win in 2026. They may not find that deal, but they should absolutely try,” he wrote.
