Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle, Wanya Morris, lines up in the third quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders on November 26, 2023 at Allegiant Stadium.
The Kansas City Chiefs may have won on Sunday night against the New York Giants, but they are far from being problem-free, as the league heads towards to the one-month mark of the season.
Despite the offensive productivity once again coming in at below expectation relative to pre-season hopes, many believe the team will manage to turn it around once both Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy return to the fold from suspension and injury in the coming weeks.
And yet, instead of being touted as a team looking to make a move ahead of November’s trade deadline, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay suggests that the team could in fact be a seller.
In a piece suggesting a potential trade for each of the winless teams in the NFL so far, Kay recommends that that the Tennessee Titans make a move for the Chiefs’ backup left tackle and 2023 third round pick, Wanya Morris.
As the Titans’ rookie quarterback, and this year’s first overall pick, Cam Ward, has faced significant pressure on dropbacks, Kay believes that the team making an upgrade on the O-line should be a key priority.
Chiefs Suggested To Trade OL To The Titans
“Many of Ward’s issues are a result of a glaring lack of pass protection.” Kay wrote on Tuesday, “The rookie leads the league with 15 sacks taken and has lost a whopping 105 yards on those plays, but he’s starting to adapt a bit better to the speed of the game. After going down on 17.7 percent of his drop-backs in the opener, Ward improved his sack rate to 13.2 in Week 2 and finally reached single-digits with a 9.5 sack rate in Week 3.”
Although Morris has hardly played like a top-level starter, Kay notes that he can provide better cover than the Titans currently have for some of the team’s early-season injuries at the position group, and has a reasonable amount of experience on the field, given his 15 starts in just over two years.
“Bringing in Wanya Morris could provide Tennessee with a capable starter while JC Latham recovers from injury. Although Morris has been riding the pine for the Kansas City Chiefs this year, the 2023 third-rounder earned valuable reps as an 11-game starter in 2024.
Morris has fallen out of favor in Kansas City and would likely be available for cheap. Although giving up a draft pick isn’t ideal for a rebuilding franchise, the Titans shouldn’t spare any expenses in their quest to keep Ward upright and his development on track.”
Would The Chiefs Be Willing To Part With Wanya Morris?
The short answer is almost certainly yes – for the right price. Morris made the active roster, once again, but currently lies as the fourth option at OT on the team.
However, both bookend tackles, Jawaan Taylor and Josh Simmons, have had a lacklustre start to the season. Taylor in particular has struggled mightily with penalties to the extent that fans have been calling for him to be replaced with offseason pickup, Jaylon Moore, who signed a 2 year, $30 million deal with the organization back in March.
This is not the first time that Morris trade rumors have swirled this past offseason – but Andy Reid and the Chiefs may feel reluctant to part with him if they are not seeing strong returns from their starters.
Ultimately, if Tennessee give up enough – something in the fifth round pick range, then KC will likely have no choice but to send him to Nashville – or somewhere else.
