Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a strong start under Thomas Frank in recent weeks, with the Danish coach making an immediate impression since arriving in the summer.
He replaced Europa League-winning boss Ange Postecoglou and has quickly shown that the board’s decision was justified. In his first six competitive matches, Frank has overseen four victories, one draw, and just a single defeat – the kind of beginning he would have hoped for in the Premier League.
Spurs’ latest outing saw them battle back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Brighton & Hove Albion, a display that underlined the progress made since Frank took charge. Two key players helped secure the result, with Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison standing out once again.
Signed from West Ham United for £55m in the summer, Kudus has already delivered four assists in his opening five league games. Two came in the Brighton clash, while he also completed six dribbles – more than anyone else on the pitch.
Richarlison, meanwhile, continued his fine form by scoring just before half-time to spark the comeback. The Brazilian registered his third league goal of the campaign and impressed with his movement, completing all of his dribbles and recording 11 touches in the opposition box.
Despite their influence, another player is emerging as perhaps Frank’s most important figure – Joao Palhinha.
The Portuguese midfielder arrived on loan from Bayern Munich after previously excelling at Fulham, and he has wasted no time in stamping his authority at Spurs. Palhinha has already scored against Manchester City, but his real strength lies in breaking up play and controlling midfield battles.
Against Brighton, he was exceptional once again. He made seven tackles – the highest by any player in a Premier League game this season – along with two interceptions and four recoveries. His anticipation was crucial, including one interception that led directly to Richarlison’s goal. On the ball, he showed composure, completing 91% of his passes across 62 touches.
Awarded a 7/10 rating for his performance, Palhinha demonstrated exactly why he has become a vital piece of Frank’s side. Tottenham have long lacked a dominant ball-winner in midfield, but the 30-year-old looks to have filled that gap.
If Spurs are to build on their promising start and challenge seriously this season, Palhinha’s influence will be central to their success.
