Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have had a rough start to the 2025 NFL season, falling to 0-2 after losses to the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. Now, the Chiefs, still looking for their first win, will hit the road for a Week 3 matchup with the New York Giants on “Sunday Night Football” at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC
While Kansas City has struggled to get things going through two weeks, Mahomes has found success off the field. On Wednesday, the two-time MVP and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce officially opened their new Kansas City-based steakhouse, 1587 Prime, where Mahomes celebrated his 30th birthday.
But the exciting week wasn’t done for Mahomes as his co-owned NWSL team had a big reason to celebrate.
In 2023, Mahomes joined the ownership group of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current, alongside his wife, Brittany Mahomes, and former NFL defender Chris Long and his wife. And on Saturday, Mahomes got to enjoy a 2-0 Current win over Seattle Reign FC at CPKC Stadium.
With the win, the Current jumped to 17-2-2 in the 2025 NWSL season, the best in the league. However, with five games remaining, the win also secured the 2025 NWSL Shield for Kansas City, which goes to the team with the best regular-season record.
“Kansas City Current are your 2025 NWSL Shield Winners presented by @CarMax ‼️,” the National Women’s Soccer League wrote on X, which Mahomes reposted.
This is the Current’s first NWSL Shield since the team was founded in 2020. They have reached the NWSL Championship only once, in 2022, falling short of the title. Despite being a relatively new club and lacking championship success, Forbes still valued the Current at $275 million, the second-highest mark in the league behind Angel City FC.
