One of the subplots for the Miami Heat entering the 2025-26 season is how the team will function now that the Jimmy Butler Era is officially over. There is some belief that Miami can be more cohesive this year and won’t have the traveling circus that followed them all of last season.
But given that Miami’s roster lacks a true superstar entering the year, it is going to put even more pressure on Erik Spoelstra to prove he can coach a squad to a sum that is better than its parts.
Erik Spoelstra looking for a bounce back season
Here is a not-so-fun stat for Spoelstra from last year:
2024-25 was tied for the worst season the Heat have had in the Erik Spoelstra Era, matching the 37 wins from 2014-15.
Like 2014-15, the Heat are going to have to adjust this year to the vacuum of talent that has left Miami.
One can argue that sending Butler on his way was needed in order to maintain long-term stability in the franchise. And considering Butler himself didn’t exactly light it up in the playoffs with Golden State, the Heat looked wise to move on.
But there is also no getting around the spark the Heat got from Butler during his time in Miami. During the five years between Lebron James leaving and Butler arriving, the Heat made it past the 1st round of the playoffs once and missed the playoffs altogether three times.
During Butler’s time with the Heat, Miami never missed the playoffs, made two NBA Finals, and went to a separate Conference Finals.
As much as one can squint and convince themselves that Spoelstra can bring it all together and get the youth movement the Heat have leaned on to gel. Kel’el Ware playing the five opens up Bam Adebayo to move around.
Miami’s collection of guards is not elite, but there are some interesting combinations they could put together to fully unlock Tyler Herro.
But there is also a pathway for this to go down as the worst season he has ever had if he doesn’t push the right buttons and the lack of true playmakers is too much to overcome.
And if that happens, how loud will the conversations start to become about Spoelstra moving forward?
