Trent Alexander-Arnold suffers injury nightmare minutes into Real Madrid Champions League debut

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s highly anticipated Champions League debut for Real Madrid ended in heartbreak after the right-back was forced off with injury just minutes into the match against Marseille.

The 26-year-old, who left Liverpool in the summer, lasted less than five minutes at the Santiago Bernabéu before pulling up with what appeared to be a hamstring problem. After playing a simple pass just two minutes and forty seconds into the game, Alexander-Arnold immediately signaled for medical attention and sat down on the pitch.

It was quickly apparent he could not continue, and Dani Carvajal — who had started in Madrid’s 2-1 win over Real Sociedad at the weekend — came on to replace him.

The injury could not have come at a worse time for Alexander-Arnold. Having started only two of Madrid’s opening four La Liga fixtures, he now faces a race against the clock to be fit for what was set to be a blockbuster reunion with his former club Liverpool in the Champions League on November 4.

The match, already billed as one of the highlights of the group phase, would have marked Alexander-Arnold’s first return to Anfield since his emotional and controversial departure in May. At the time, he explained that leaving Liverpool after two decades was the toughest decision of his career:

🗣️ “I’ve been here 20 years now, loved every single minute of it, achieved all my dreams. But I’ve got to a point now where I feel like I need a change, a new challenge for me as a player and as a person. And I think now is the right time for me to do that.”

With Madrid and Liverpool both aiming to top their Champions League group, the subplot of Alexander-Arnold’s return was expected to be one of the competition’s biggest storylines. Whether he recovers in time remains to be seen, but his early setback has cast real doubt on the reunion.
