The Kansas City Chiefs are now 0-2 following Sunday’s tough loss.
There were some high hopes for the Chiefs in their first home game of the season in a Super Bowl rematch against the defending champs, the Philadelphia Eagles. Patrick Mahomes and Co. came up short, though, as the Eagles secured an impressive 20-17 win at Arrowhead Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters after the game, and he did not beat around the bush. The 67-year-old quickly revealed who’s to blame for Sunday’s defeat: himself.
“I’ll take full responsibility for that game,” Reid said, via Chiefs beat reporter Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star.
Mahomes turned in a respectable performance in the loss, finishing with 16-of-29 passes for 187 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The All-Pro quarterback also had seven carries for 66 rushing yards and a TD.
It was not exactly a spectacular performance from Mahomes, but it would not be fair to pin this loss on him, despite his crucial turnover in the fourth quarter after his red-zone pass to Travis Kelce came off the star tight end’s hands.
Instead, Reid has stepped up to the plate and has pointed the finger at himself. He’s taking the blame for this one, pointing to shortcomings on the coaching front as the main reason behind the deflating loss.
Reid and the Chiefs will get a chance to redeem themselves in Week 3 when they battle the New York Giants in a road game at MetLife Stadium. It’s not entirely a must-win matchup for the Chiefs, but a 0-3 start to the season would not be an ideal position for them.
