Noted Kansas City Chiefs offseason addition Kristian Fulton has been an undeniable miss in the first two weeks of the season. The struggles started in Brazil against the Los Angeles Chargers, with Fulton being a big piece of why Justin Herbert was able to move the ball at will. The corner’s PFF grade speaks to this, with Fulton managing only a 52.8 on 15 snaps. The veteran was limited due to frustrating production after it appeared the corner had a chance to handle the bulk of the snaps as the third option.
However, this has continued to not be the case after Fulton suffered an ankle injury that the Kansas City Chiefs’ official X account would report, along with the fact that the defender was doubtful to return. In the first game of the season, Fulton couldn’t stay on the field due to performance, making it clear there were superior options. A little over a week later, Fulton has exited the second game and is unlikely to return. Pointing to the fact that this was a rare miss.
Chiefs’ Kristian Fulton Signing Appears to Be an Early Bust
Kansas City’s GM Brett Veach has earned fans’ trust for obvious reasons with a long line of moves that have helped maintain the dynasty. Even the questionable decisions to part ways with Tyreek Hill and L’Jarius Sneed have fallen in Kansas City’s favor. There is a high level of trust that the front office is going to find surprise producers in the bargain aisles of free agency and with its draft picks.
This is due to a long line of home runs that have made it easier to swallow what few mistakes the front office does make. It is now clear that among these few misses was the decision to add Fulton. The former Charger was only signed to a two-year $20 million deal that can be easily escaped after this season. If the results don’t drastically change in the next weeks, this is the path we are walking.
With that said, it is important to remember that it is still extremely early in the season and Kansas City’s defense often figures things out as we get deeper into the year. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is one of the best defensive minds in the league and has earned enough credit to believe he still has a chance to find a fit for Fulton in this defense.
As frustrating as the results have been, we are still only two weeks into the season, and Fulton still has time to redeem himself. Leaving hope that even after two weeks of frustration, what appears to be a failed signing could still work out in Kansas City’s favor.
